In most businesses, file permissions accumulate over the years without anyone auditing them. A staff member who joined five years ago might still have access to salary records, client contracts from previous accounts, or board materials from before their role changed. They’ve never looked at those files.

Why Encryption Doesn’t Protect You Here
Encryption protects data at rest, meaning data sitting in storage. It doesn’t protect you at the point of AI processing.
When Copilot retrieves a file to answer a query, the user’s authenticated access has already satisfied the encryption check. If the permissions are wrong, Copilot presents the data regardless of how it was stored.
By April 2026, Microsoft had rolled out Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP) support for Copilot. Purview DLP prevents files marked with sensitivity labels from being included in Copilot prompts or surfaced during AI-assisted searches. But DLP only functions correctly if sensitivity labels are accurately applied before deployment.
