- What is the Cloud?
Like real clouds, the cloud, as a term, can be ethereal. It overlaps with many computer concepts that came before and after it. However Microbyte's conception of it is that it is a vast offsite, multi-site server farm in which you servers can reside, providing your business with its computing requirements. These server farms are are owned and run by familiar names such as Amazon and Microsoft. Keeping servers on the cloud is a superiour alternative to the traditional set up of having them in your office, where it is susceptible to theft, power cuts, and hardware failure, upgrades or downgrades. - Why's Cloud so expensive? There is a common misconception that computer costs are always going down. However this is born out of the theory that as things become mass market they become cheaper, which of course is true. However, there is a life cycle which must be respected. Old technology becomes incompatible and there is only so far you can drive down costs without it being to the detriment of your business. But, comparing apples with apples, Cloud costs are usually not dissimilar to on-prem, but with more advantages such as flexibility and resilience. What we mean by this, is if you replace your hardware every 3 - 5 years, stay on top of licences, pay for reliable power management and cooling...
